“The Paperboy” by Dav Pilkey

Pilkey, D. (1996). The paperboy. New York: Dav Pilkey.

Dav Pilkey’s “The Paperboy” is a simple and tranquil story about a paperboy and his dog. With enchanting illustrations, this book shows the day and the life of the paperboy, which look slightly different than other people’s days and lives. While all the people in the town are still sleeping, the boy and his dog rise and run their paper route; this is when they are the happiest. Then, as all the rest of the town starts to wake up, that is when the boy and his dog head back to sleep to dream the morning away. The illustrations and the storyline create a sense of ease and contentment that won this picture book the Caldecott Honor. As newspapers and paper routes become rarer, this book captures the simple and charming life of a paper boy and his dog.
