Hoberman, M. A. (2007). You read to me, i’ll read to you: Very short scary tales to read together, illustrated by Michael Emberly. New York: Little, Brown and Company.

Mary Ann Hoberman’s You Read to Me, I’ll Read to You  is a fun and interactive poetry picture book. Among the rest of the You Read to Me, I’ll Read to You collection, this book is full of spooky tales. Each individual story is written in a poetic form broken down into a call-and-response type format. This picture book is meant to be read with a partner. One partner reads the lines in blue, the other reads the lines in red, and the orange lines are meant to be recited in unison. This style of poetry takes the readers on a unique adventure as they visit witches, phantoms, and even dinosaurs. Along with the reading, Michael Emberly’s illustrations add character to the written words. The quirky nature of his artwork ensure that this picture book is not too scary for younger audiences. Whether you’re reading this book by yourself or reading it with a friend, Mary Ann Hoberman’s You Read to Me, I’ll Read to You is a fun and quirky Halloween adventure that you can experience any time of the year.

Love this book. Could be fun for some simple reader’s theater. Or as a mentor text for students to develop their own two voice poems.
